The New York Times will start charging for content in January 2011

The Wall Street Journal reports that the New York Times will begin charging for online access in January 2011.  The Times will charge for access using a metered system.

I cancelled my subscription to the Times last September.  My decision to cancel was fraught with much anguish. However, since the Times was giving its content away on the web for free, why bother paying?  I still read the paper daily online.

Many on the web question whether the move will benefit the paper’s bottom line.  Do you think the New York Times should charge for access?  Will the paper’s influence wane?
